Waxahachie High School’s production of “Mary Poppins” is nominated for ten awards in the Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards this year. The winners will be announced at the 8th Annual DSM HSMTA gala at the Music Hall at Fair Park May 9.

WHS Fine Arts Director Andrew Reynolds said, “We have been nominated for 62 awards over 8 years, winning 11 times in various categories including Best Actor (Matthew Haught 2014) Best Actress (Kaiden Maines 2016) and Best Musical (Spamalot 2016). Waxahachie HS also has won Best Direction, Best Orchestra, Best Set Design, and best Music Direction three times over the past several years. We hope to add to that number of wins on March 9th at the awards show.”

Reynolds said this year’s production of “Mary Poppins” features a strong ensemble, outstanding crew, and amazing voices and dancing. Asked what contributed to the high school’s ability to draw so many talented musical theatre students, Reynolds said, “I think we have created a culture of excellence in our fine arts departments over the past several years. The little kids see these wonderful musicals at a young age and are chomping at the bit to be a part of it when they get to high school And, they always deliver when they get to us!”

“Many of our kids are now working professionally all over the country, and some are currently performing arts majors at colleges and universities,” Reynolds said. “We wouldn’t have the consistent success we have here at WHS if it weren’t for the overwhelming support of the WISD administration, the community members of Waxahachie, and our awesome parents.”

Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards

Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM) patterns the DSM HSMTA after Broadway’s Tony® Awards. The awards celebrate the power of the arts and its ability to significantly improve all areas of education. DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize artistic and educational achievements of North Texas students and their high school programs. A total of 63 performances from 60 participating high schools were evaluated by a three-judge panel of entertainment industry professionals and veteran educators.

“DSM is so proud to celebrate the achievements of students and teachers from theatre programs across North Texas,” said Kenneth T. Novice, DSM President. “This awards ceremony is one of our most cherished nights of the year and we can’t wait to honor all of the 2019 nominees!”

Awards are presented in 16 categories and scholarships are awarded to outstanding graduating seniors who are nominated by their teachers and selected by the DSM scholarship committee. The Best Actor and Actress winners receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City where they represent DSM HSMTA in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards) at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway.

Through funds raised by private donations and ticket sales, DSM HSMTA will award $55,000 in scholarships to continue to foster the great talent North Texas has to offer. To date, DSM HSMTA College Scholarship program has awarded $250,000 in cash scholarships to deserving students.

All nominees, participating high schools and their shows are listed at DSMHSMTA.org. Winners will be announced at the DSM HSMTA awards ceremony May 9 at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Tickets for the ceremony start at $20 each. They are on sale now at DallasSummerMusicals.org or by phone at (800) 982-2787.
