First Major Roadway Project For South Dallas County In More Than 50 Years
CEDAR HILL—The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing to widen US 67 from Beltline Road to Interstate 20.
TxDOT will hold a public hearing from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 at the Cedar Hill Recreation Center, 310 E. Parkerville Road in Cedar Hill.
There have been public hearings throughout Southern Dallas County. October 11, is the final face to face presentation that the public will have access to.
“TxDOT has a final opportunity for citizens to provide feedback on the proposed US 67 widening project. After the public hearing is completed, citizens have another 15 days to provide written comment. Public involvement is a priority for TxDOT,” said Michelle Raglon, TxDOT spokesperson.
Displays will be available for viewing and the formal part of the hearing will begin at 7 p.m. The purpose of the hearing is to present the planned improvements to the public and to receive comment on the proposed project.
“TxDOT is working with the Best Southwest cities to help relieve congestion and provide better mobility for people who live and work in southern Dallas county,” said Raglon. “In recent years, population growth has resulted in an increase on transportation demand. The extra lanes and improved ramps will ease the commute for motorists in this fast growing area.”
The US 67 widening project, previously part of TxDOT’s Southern Gateway project, is now a separate project that is anticipated to begin in 2017 and be completed by 2019.
This is the first time that road projects of this magnitude have come to the South of Downtown Dallas in more than 50 years.
Highway 67 Project Offers Traffic Relief
The US 67 project will widen the existing US 67 from a four-lane roadway to a six-lane roadway within the limits extending from Beltline to I-20 in Dallas County. The roadway for this section would consist of constructing one additional 12-foot travel lane in each direction with a 10-foot outside shoulder and four-foot inside shoulder within the existing 300 to 400-foot right of way.
Improvements would also include the addition of U-Turn bridges at Beltline and Farm-to-Market FM 1382.
The project length of the US 67 from Beltline to I-20 project is six miles. The proposed improvements would not require additional right of way or drainage easements. No residential or commercial property displacements or relocations would be required. The project includes work within a FEMA-designated 100-year floodplain. The hydraulic design for this project would be in accordance with current FHWA and TxDOT design policies.
The cost of the project is approximately $50 million. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2017 with expected completion by 2019. Funding from the state’s congestion relief fund is earmarked for this project.
