Meet Ruby Young Elementary Principal Kelvin Oliver

Where did you grow up/where are you from originally?
I grew up in south Mississippi in a small town near the MS/LA border called Waveland.

What do you currently do with the DeSoto ISD?
I am the new principal at Ruby Young Environmental Science and Medical Magnet Academy.

What were you doing prior to working for DeSoto ISD?
For the past three years, I worked in Richardson ISD as a curriculum specialist and assistant principal. Prior to Richardson ISD, I was a math specialist and teacher in Crowley ISD. I started my educational career as a special education teacher in Del Valle ISD.

Did you always know you wanted to be part of education?
It took me some time. My mother was an educator for over 30 years and encouraged me to take a similar path. So I naturally did the opposite until I finally listened to her and gave teaching a chance. Nine years later, I am still here and honestly cannot think of anything else I would rather be doing. I truly love this profession.

What does the Ruby Young Elementary Principal do?
I am charged with ensuring that the academic programming, school operations, and overall culture and climate of the school are aligned with the vision of the school and the district.

What do you like most about this job?
The opportunity to positively impact the lives of some many children as well as the communities they come from.

What do you think are some of your biggest challenges in this job?
One of the biggest challenges facing all educators is identifying and meeting the needs of 21st Century learners. My biggest challenge is ensuring that our school is providing our students with the knowledge and foundational skills to be successful in a world that is continuously evolving.

What are some of the things you have accomplished with the ISD and what are your goals moving into the new school year ?
I am extremely excited about the opportunity to develop and grow the medical magnet program at Ruby Young. If you look around the country, there are not many programs like this at the elementary level. I believe we have the opportunity to create something special, not just for DeSoto ISD but the entire Metroplex.

What is your favorite DeSoto ISD event?
While I have not had the opportunity to experience a DeSoto ISD event as of yet, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to do so. The one thing that is very evident in DeSoto ISD is the family atmosphere. In such a short amount time, I feel that I have already been embraced as a member of DeSoto ISD family.

What do you do in your down time?
I was a communications major in school so I still have a passion for media and new technology. I enjoy working on video and website projects in my spare time. I cherish spending time with friends and family because I truly believe wealth is in relationships. I am also part of a bocce league that provides me with a weekly outlet and a great opportunity to connect with professionals outside of education.

What is your favorite DeSoto memory?
So far, I would say it was my first board meeting. It was a great showcase of the excellence and passion in this district. What I observed that evening, confirmed that DeSoto ISD is where I want to be.
