GLENN HEIGHTS—It is a Veterans Day Fun Run relaunch in Glenn Heights this year. Glenn Heights’ spokesperson Lauren Lewis says they are expecting between 50 to 75 participants this year.
The festivities will be held on November 10 at Heritage Community Park on Bear Creek Road. Onsite registration for the run opens at 7:15 a.m. and the run begins at 8:15 a.m.
There will be a Race Awards Ceremony following the race as well as a Veteran Appreciation Program.
The city is hosting the Veterans Day Fun Run in honor of Veterans Day, according to Lewis who added “The 5k and Fun Run [is] to honor and celebrate our Veteran community.”
The City originally hosted a 5K Race and Fun Run during the annual Family Festival in 2015 and then hosted another run in 2016 with a break last year.
The Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run as well as the Appreciation Program began in 2014. The Glenn Heights City Council members at that time recognized the city had a large and strong veterans presence within the community.
“Since 2014, The City of Glenn Heights has hosted an annual event to honor our veterans and current service members,” Lewis explains. “This year, we wanted to relaunch our 5K Race and Fun Run and thought Veterans Day would be the prime opportunity to reactivate this popular community event.”
Organized by the City of Glenn Heights Community Engagement Department, the run will begin and end at Heritage Community Park. Its exact route is still to be determined according to Lewis.
Veteran Appreciation Program
After the race, the day continues with a Veteran Appreciation Program consisting of Veterans and current service members being recognized, presented with a token, photographed with elected officials and sent home with a treat.
“If you or a loved one is a Veteran or current service member, please submit the name for recognition,” Lewis said also adding “We will not host a resource fair this year, but we are seeking volunteers from the community to assist with the implementation of the event.”
Also, if community organizations would like to host a table to share their resources, they can contact Community Engagement at ghce@glennheightstx.gov.
State Representative Helen Giddings has been asked to attend and participate in the event. Those in attendance will have the chance to meet Glenn Heights City Council Members as well as Veteran Resource Representatives.
“We not only encourage community members and Veterans to participate in the race, but we are also asking them to submit their loved ones name for the opportunity to be formally recognized and thanked for their service to this country and this community,” says Lewis.
All proceeds from this event will benefit the City of Glenn Heights Veterans Memorial. A Veterans Memorial Committee has been established to oversee the development of the Memorial.
“If you have a loved one that has served or you’re a veteran yourself, please show your appreciation and support by participating in this year’s event.” Lewis concluded. “We love our Veteran community and want to recognize you and your loved one this Veteran’s Day. Come celebrate with us by participating in the Veterans Day 5K and Fun Run.”
